Tips To Find A Proper Fitting Sports Bra

As a woman, I know how challenging it can be to find a bra that fits properly, never mind a sports bra. However, it is important to spend the time to choose a bra that is right for your body type and activity level. I hope the tips below will help make that challenge, a little bit easier for you.

Wearing a sports bras that is comfortable and fits properly, is just as important as the shoes you wear when exercising. Your bra should be a snug but comfortable fit, as to reduce bouncing, flailing and jarring of your breasts to prevent injury.

Common Fit Problems - Too small, too big, too loose and straps

Cups - Too small

Breasts should be centered and level in the cups and completely held within the cups. If breast tissue comes out on the top or sides, the cup is too small.

Cups - Too big

The fabric should be smooth, wrinkles or puckers mean the cup is too big.

Band - Too loose

The band should lay straight across your back without riding up and should be more snug than a regular bra. If it rides up, the straps may need to be adjusted or it is too loose. You should be able to take a deep breath comfortably, with the bra fastened on the loosest hook adjustment.

Band - Underwire

The underwire should follow your natural shape and sit on your ribcage, below the breast tissue. It should not pinch or poke. The center panel should lay flat against your breastbone, if not, you may need a larger cup.

Straps - Proper fit

The straps should offer minimal stretch to reduce the up and down movement of the breasts. Straps should not dig in or slide off your shoulders, however if they do try to adjust them for a better custom fit.

HOW TO MEASURE - Follow Steps 1 - 4

These are guidelines for measuring to help you find a cup size. It is best to measure over a regular bra without any padding and to get someone to measure for you.

Step 1 - Rib Cage - Measure around the rib cage, just under the breast at the bottom band. Make sure the tape measure is snug and round down to the closest inch.

Step 2 - Band Size - Take the rib cage measurement and refer to the bottom band chart to find the band size.

Bottom Band Measurement Guide

Rib Cage = Band Size
25" - 26" = 30
27" - 28" = 32
28" - 30" = 34
31" - 32" = 36
33" - 34" = 38
35" - 36" = 40
37" - 38" = 42
39" - 40" = 44

Step 3 - Bust Measurement - Measure loosely around your bust at the fullest point of the breasts. The fullest point may be lower and not at center if you are a larger breasted woman.

Step 4 - Cup Size - To find your cup size, subtract actual rib cage measurement in inches (step 1) from actual bust measurement in inches (step 3). The difference in inches is the suggested cup size. If you are between sizes round down.

Cup Size Measurement Guide

Cup Size Difference = Your Cup Size
3" = AA
4" = A
5" = B
6" = C
7" = D
8" = DD
9" = EE

Example: 37" - 30.5" = 6.5" - So your Cup Size would be C
Bust Size (37") - Rib Cage Size (30.5") = Cup Size (6.5" or C)

Using the charts, you need to find the Band Size and Cup Size
Remember, it's the rib cage measurement you need to find the band size.
Band Size is 34 and Cup Size is C = 34 C
